The single biggest misconception I run into as a brand designer?
That a brand is simply a logo.
Something you can prompt into ChatGPT with a few adjectives, slap onto a business card, drop into your Instagram profile, and call it a day.
And listen… a beautiful logo is lovely. I make them for a living.
But if your logo disappeared tomorrow, would your brand still feel like your brand?
Because here’s what I think we’re actually building.
Not brands.
Worlds.
Lately I’ve been thinking about the businesses I can’t stop coming back to. The restaurants that somehow make me linger over one more glass of wine. The boutique hotels that make me wonder if I could just… live there forever. The beauty brands whose emails I actually open. The coffee shops where somehow every song, every scent, and every ceramic mug feels intentional.
None of them won me over because of their logo.
They won me over because of how they made me feel.
And that’s the part of branding I think gets overlooked.
Before someone reads your About page…
Before they understand your pricing…
Before they decide whether to inquire…
They’ve already felt something.
Your typography whispered something.
Your photography suggested something.
Your words carried an energy.
Your style left them wanting to see more.
They’re all quietly telling a story before your audience has consciously processed a single fact.
Which is why I think branding is less about designing assets…
…and more about designing an atmosphere. A world.
An emotional home your ideal client instantly recognizes and wants to spend more time inside.
Because here’s the funny thing about humans.
We like to believe we make rational purchasing decisions.
When really…we don’t.
Research suggests that up to 95% of our purchasing decisions happen subconsciously. Which explains why the brands we remember aren’t always the ones with the best products or most compelling data. They’re the ones that leave us with a feeling we can’t quite explain. You know the kind… you walk into a hotel, browse a boutique, or stumble across a website and immediately think, “Whatever this is… I want to be part of it.”
We’re emotional creatures first, and logical creatures second.
The strongest brands understand this.
They don’t just communicate information.
They create immersion.
They build little worlds.
And every tiny decision – from the language and emojis they use to the music in their reels to the experience after someone clicks “Book Now” – reinforces that world until it becomes unmistakably theirs.
That’s what brand consistency really sets out to achieve. It’s not about using the same beige on every graphic or repeating the same logo placement.
It’s about creating so many small, cohesive moments that trust quietly accumulates over time.
Because consistency isn’t repetitive. It’s actually reassuring.
It’s your audience knowing exactly what kind of experience they’re about to step into before they even arrive.
And that’s the shift I’ve been thinking about lately.
Instead of asking,
“Does my brand look elevated?”
Maybe the better question is,
“What world am I inviting people into?”
Because people rarely fall in love with a logo.
But they absolutely fall in love with a feeling.
And if you can create a world they genuinely want to belong to…
You’ve built something far more difficult to copy.
You’ve built a brand.
